Paging has gone through some tough times, emerging stronger and leaner, argues Derek Banner, chair of the Critical Messaging Association – Europe
Radiopaging was first used in the mid-1950s in St Thomas’ Hospital, London, where it was used to alert doctors and emergency teams at critical times. When there was a crisis an operator would send a unique code to a pocket-sized receiver worn by each of the staff. The receiver would then emit a beeping signal that warned the user that they were needed in a pre-assigned place as quickly as possible. The whole system was supplied and installed by UK company Multitone.
