UKERNA launches its new JANET txt SMS service in conjunction with PageOne

UK educational and research organisations will soon have access to a secure SMS text messaging service called JANET txt following an agreement signed today between UKERNA, (United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association) and PageOne, the UK’s leading provider of messaging technology and services

The JANET txt service will be provided by PageOne on behalf of UKERNA and will allow the UK’s educational and research organisations to distribute individual or Smart Groups to mobiles, landlines, email and pagers through one, easy to use, interface. JANET txt also provides 2-way SMS functionality as well as multi-lingual and international delivery capability. As well as secure encrypted connectivity through the JANET network, participating organisations will have full administrative control to regulate their own usage of the texting facility. This includes a control panel that details messages sent, time and date received, and any response received from the original recipient.

Oventus, PageOne’s own powerful messaging infrastructure will power the new JANET txt service, which can be seamlessly integrated within an institutions existing MIS, Library and VLE system or offered as a secure desktop solution to the more than 18 million end-users currently served by the JANET network. The service has been designed from the outset to honour best practice in handling sensitive data, including information potentially relating to minors or vulnerable adults, with all staff who have access to sensitive data being CRB checked.

Tim Marshall, Chief Executive of UKERNA said, “We are very pleased to be working with PageOne. The procurement process was extremely competitive, with interest from a large number of companies. PageOne not only met UKERNA’s requirements and offered excellent value for money, but also presented scope for future development. The new agreement ensures the service is both secure and reliable and offers us the most flexible, cost effective and robust communications service for the JANET community. We look forward to a strong and beneficial relationship between UKERNA and PageOne.”

Nigel Gray, PageOne’s Sales Director comments, “PageOne has worked within the public sector for over 20 years which means that we have an invaluable understanding of large and small public sector organisations’ specific requirements. We’re delighted that the procurement panel felt PageOne Communications met UKERNA’s requirements, and we look forward to working with JANET on future developments.”
